On Saturday we had a fantastic day out at Maldon Promenade in Essex. There is plenty for the children to do with the splash park, galleon play park, sandpit and funfair but in an atmosphere and surroundings that are pleasing to us adults with the lake complete with fountains swans and ducks, to watching the boats coming and going on their travels .
It was a very friendly atmosphere with parents talking to each other and very hands on with their kids, rather than sending them off to play while they talk with their friends and ignore what their children are doing. There is also a BMX track and a skate park for older children and close by is the Blackwater Leisure Centre where you can go for a swim.
The splash park is great value at £2 for a 25 minute session, we generally have 2 sessions when we go, but yesterday was a bit chilly when the sun went in so 25 minutes was enough. This is great fun for all ages and our two who are 1 and 4 years old loved it. At the other end of the park there is a traditional children’s playground with swings and slides and a maze plus a wildlife garden, which is a bit of a hidden gem and usually fairly quiet.
There are plenty of kiosks to get a cup of tea an ice cream or some crayfish to sit down with while you watch the boats come and go or if you are after something a little more substantial after the sandpit there are a couple of pubs where you can grab some lunch or dinner.
During the summer at weekends and through the holidays there is a funfair, although unlike other fair’s there is no wristband option and each token is £1.25 so this can soon make the day a little more expensive than planned. Here they have dodgems, bungee-trampolines, a large inflatable and other rides. You can avoid this part though as it is tucked back behind the car park.
We would thoroughly recommend a trip here in the summer, with a picnic it can be a very cheap day or if you want to make a full day of it the town is just a short walk up the hill from the Jolly Sailor pub. Overall there is plenty to do and lots of space to enjoy it, for all ages.
